PennDOT Opens News Landenberg Road Bridge

From Penn DOT, July 27, 2010 - "The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) today opened the new $1.7 million Landenberg Road Bridge over the east branch of White Clay Creek in New Garden Township, Chester County.

The new single-span, steel beam bridge is 78 feet long, 20 feet wide and resembles its historic predecessor. Adorning the bridge is the truss and railing from the previous span and the bridge’s reinforced concrete abutments and wing walls are covered with an architectural treatment to mirror the stone masonry pattern of the former bridge walls. A new six-foot wide pedestrian walkway also is part of the new structure.

PennDOT’s contractor began construction last October when crews removed the old structurally deficient Pratt pony truss bridge that was built in 1871. The former span was closed to vehicular traffic in 1999 due to severe structural deterioration.

New Garden Township will take ownership of the new bridge and hold a ceremony to dedicate the bridge on October 3, 2010.

J.D. Eckman, Inc. of Atglen, Pa. was the general contractor on the $1,717,845 project, which was financed with 100 percent state funds.
